Too little fat 'can make children overweight' | the Daily Mail

Experts in Nutrition have been saying this for a long time - you have to eat fat to lose fat. (good oils such as flax and hemp)

Children who eat too little fat can end up overweight, a new study has found.

Researchers in Sweden discovered that eating the right sort of fat kept the weight of children down.

Those who were significantly overweight consumed low amounts of unsaturated fat, the type found in fish, olive oil and vegetables. (and hemp and flax)

Scientists at Goteborg University looked at the eating habits and lifestyles of almost 200 healthy four-year-olds.

Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements that relate weight and height showed that 23 per cent of the children were overweight and 2 per cent clinically obese.

Most of the children came from good socio-economic backgrounds. The researchers said a broader range of children would probably have yielded more who were overweight.

Examination of the children revealed that weight increases were due to the body storing too much fat - but those who ate the most fat were not the heaviest with children who ate less fat having higher BMI readings.

The researchers believe lack of omega-3 fats was especially significant.

Eating tofu can slash ovarian cancer risk | the Daily Mail
Eating tofu regularly can almost halve a woman's chances of developing ovarian cancer, according to researchers.

A study found that a daily portion of 10gm of the food, a meat substitute made from soya bean curd, cut the risk by 44 per cent.

This level of consumption releases around 3mg or more of isoflavones, the plant hormones in soya believed to protect against some forms of cancer and heart disease.

Scientists from the Northern California Cancer Centre carried out the research involving 100,000 active and retired teachers.

In total, 280 cases of ovarian cancer were diagnosed.

Milk Might Transmit Mad Cow Disease

mad cows disease New evidence that links non vegan milk and dairy products such as cheese to CJD the human form of BSE mad cows' disease.

Milk Might Transmit Mad Cow Disease: "During the current study, Nicola Franscini and colleagues at Case Western University School of Medicine, detected prion protein (PrPC)-the precursor of prions (PrPSc)-in milk from humans, cows, sheep, and goats.

They found prions to be heat-resistant and treatment of infected milk to very high temperature only partially diminished endogenous PrPC concentration.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Prions endure all types of environment.

The study declares that drinking the milk of a cow infected with mad cow disease may transmit the disease to the consumers although it is not clear, how serious the risk might be. "

BBC Ape Diet Experiment shows good for Heart and Diabetes

BBC vegan ape diet experiment reduced cholesterol and balanced insulin levels in only 12 days

BBC NEWS Magazine Going ape - More evidence supporting a plant based vegan diet. The BBC locked volunteers in a Zoo and fed them a raw food Ape (Gorilla) type diet.

'Nine volunteers, aged 36 to 49, took on the 12-day Evo Diet, consuming up to five kilos of raw fruit and veg a day. '

Overall, their cholesterol levels dropped 23%, an amount usually achieved only through anti-cholesterol drugs statins. (Which are recently reported to have newly discovered side effects)

The group's average blood pressure fell from a level of 140/83 - almost hypertensive - to 122/76. Though it was not intended to be a weight loss diet, they dropped 4.4kg (9.7lbs), on average.

Interestingly their insulin levels were balanced too.

In another experiment they pitted fresh fruit and vegetables against expensive probiotic yoghurts and found that supporting your gut with prebiotics (fruit and veg) was far more effective at increasing digestive system good bacteria than loading yourself up with probiotics (posh yoghurts)

I make that 3 : 0 to Fruit & Veg vs Drugs in the fight against coronary heart disease, diabetes and digestive health.

The BBC also report that consumption of Fruit and Veg in the UK is up (by nearly 13%) but London Nutritionist Yvonne Bishop-Weston says that consumption needs to at least double to make a significant positive effect on health. 'Most people eat nowhere near the 5 a day goal and the optimum consumption should be more like 9-10 hand palm sized portions of fruit and veg a day'

That Hemp in particular would benefit from consumer concern about the environment and a need to increase nutritional intake of essential fats such as omega 3.

2 weeks later Hemp is already featuring on the Today show and supermarket guru , California's Phil Lempert has agreed wholeheartedly with Yvonne.

"One of the hottest food trends for 2007 may well have its origins dating back thousands of years.
Take a look down the aisles … and it's all about hemp!
Hemp has been grown for at least the last 12,000 years for fiber and food. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew hemp and in fact Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on hemp paper. " he says.

Study Show's Vegan Diet best for Diabetes

: "NEW YORK, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes (Rodale), to be released on Tuesday, January 9, outlines a powerful new dietary approach to diabetes, based on scientific research proving that a low-fat vegan diet can lower high blood sugar levels three times more effectively than oral medications or the standard diet recommended by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Dr. Barnard's program is based on a major study he conducted in conjunction with George Washington University and University of Toronto that was funded by the National Institutes of Health.

The study, recently published in Diabetes Care, a journal of the ADA, also shows that the low-fat vegan diet is easier for study participants to follow- and stick with-than the ADA diet. Additionally, the vegan diet controls cholesterol better and results in faster weight loss even though it places no limits on calories or portion sizes and doesn't require exercise.

While Dr. Barnard's program recommends against white bread, sugar, and other foods that can cause blood-sugar spikes, the diet allows unlimited quantities of 'good' carbs, such as rye bread, pumpernickel, sweet potatoes, rice, and, pasta. Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes is the first book to prove that nutrition is more powerful than oral medications in the treatment of diabetes. "
